NFC Tag Management

This guide covers everything you need to know about managing NFC tags in the FC Safety Shield system.

NFC (Near Field Communication) tags are small, passive devices that store data and communicate with NFC-enabled smartphones and tablets. In FC Safety Shield, these tags:

  • Uniquely identify each piece of equipment
  • Store equipment metadata
  • Enable quick, contactless inspections
  • Provide tamper-evident tracking

FC Safety Shield uses industrial-grade NFC tags with:

  • Standard: ISO 14443A/B compatible
  • Memory: 888 bytes EEPROM
  • Read Range: 1-4 cm (optimal at 1-2 cm)
  • Durability: Waterproof, temperature resistant
  • Lifespan: 10+ years typical use

Choose a tag location that is:

  • Accessible: Easy to reach with a mobile device
  • Visible: Clear line of sight for inspectors
  • Protected: Sheltered from direct damage
  • Clean: Free from dirt, moisture, or debris
  • Flat: Smooth surface for proper adhesion
  1. Clean the Surface

    • Wipe with isopropyl alcohol
    • Remove dirt, oil, or moisture
    • Allow to dry completely
  2. Position the Tag

    • Hold tag in desired location
    • Verify NFC reads properly (test scan)
    • Mark the position if needed
  3. Apply the Tag

    • Remove backing slowly
    • Press firmly from center outward
    • Smooth out any air bubbles
    • Apply even pressure for 30 seconds
  4. Test the Tag

    • Wait 24 hours for full adhesion
    • Scan with FC Safety Shield app
    • Verify proper data display
    • Document installation

To register a new NFC tag in the system:

  1. Access Tag Management

    • Log in to the web portal
    • Navigate to Equipment > Add Equipment
    • Select “Register New Tag”
  2. Scan the Tag

    • Use your mobile device
    • Tap the new NFC tag
    • Confirm tag ID appears
  3. Enter Equipment Details

    • Equipment type
    • Manufacturer and model
    • Serial number
    • Purchase date
    • Location information
    • Assigned department
  4. Set Inspection Schedule

    • Inspection frequency
    • First inspection date
    • Assigned inspector(s)
    • Notification preferences
  5. Save Configuration

    • Review all information
    • Submit registration
    • Verify confirmation

To update existing tag configuration:

  1. Navigate to Equipment > Manage Equipment
  2. Search for the equipment
  3. Click Edit
  4. Update necessary fields
  5. Save changes

Common updates include:

  • Location changes
  • Ownership transfers
  • Schedule modifications
  • Contact updates

Replace NFC tags when:

  • Tag is damaged or scratched
  • Reads are inconsistent or failing
  • Equipment is replaced
  • Tag won’t scan after cleaning
  • Data corruption occurs
  1. Deactivate Old Tag

    • Mark as inactive in system
    • Document reason for replacement
    • Preserve historical data
  2. Install New Tag

    • Follow installation steps above
    • Use new tag with unique ID
  3. Transfer Data

    • Link new tag to equipment record
    • Maintain inspection history
    • Update all related records
  4. Dispose of Old Tag

    • Remove from equipment
    • Destroy or return to administrator
    • Update inventory records

Periodically check NFC tags for:

  • Physical damage or wear
  • Dirt or debris buildup
  • Adhesive deterioration
  • Environmental damage
  • Read performance

To clean NFC tags:

  1. Use soft, lint-free cloth
  2. Dampen with water or mild cleaner
  3. Gently wipe tag surface
  4. Avoid harsh chemicals or solvents
  5. Allow to dry completely

Symptoms: Device doesn’t detect the tag

Solutions:

  1. Clean the tag surface
  2. Remove phone case
  3. Verify NFC is enabled
  4. Try different angles
  5. Check for metal interference
  6. Test with different device
  7. Replace tag if damaged

Symptoms: Tag works intermittently

Solutions:

  1. Clean tag thoroughly
  2. Check for physical damage
  3. Verify tag adhesion
  4. Test environmental factors
  5. Update app to latest version
  6. Consider tag replacement

Symptoms: Tag shows incorrect equipment information

Solutions:

  1. Verify tag ID in system
  2. Check for duplicate tags
  3. Review equipment records
  4. Update tag configuration
  5. Contact administrator

Some tags include tamper-evident features:

  • Destructible Tags: Break when removed
